Mission Failed

Unfortunately I had to prematurely abort the hydrospeed descend of the river Soča. The drysuit became a very wet wetsuit and after 14 hours in the water I had to call it a day.

Here is how the events evolved.

I jumped in the water at 8 in the morning and shortly after, on the first rapid, I hit a rock with my knee. Unfortunately the drysuit trilaminate on the knee suffered a small rapture and even if there were two layers of the waterproof material and the inside one was not damaged, the suit started to leak.

I than stopped in Trnovo in the Alpin Action shop where with the help of my support crew, we successfully patched the hole. Soon after, in the technically most challenging part of the river, the Katarakt, the right shoe started to take water. And that was not only drops, but proper amount of water. Problems usually come in pairs, so also the left shoe started t feel like a cold, small swimming pool.

Because the suit was no longer dry I exchanged the thermal underwear for a thick neoprene long john. But the problem just got bigger and bigger, the suit was started to leak even through the fabric on all the places that were bending of were pressing against the hydrospeed. Knees, lower back, stomach, elbows… and the situation was deteriorating every hour. In the evening I was already so tired that I was not able to keep the temperature up and felt very cold. I decided to abort the challenge at Most na Soči.

Sadly I won’t be able to make another attempt until spring, when the new season opens, so I have the winter to source a better suit for the Soča 2.0 edition.

Many thanks to Fluid Kayaks and Rokx Adventure for the Anvil hydrospeed, Gecko Headwear for the helmet, the both worked perfectly!

Many thanks to Andraž Krpič – Muki, for the help on the difficult part of the river, and Gregor Zadravec for the impeccable shore support and beautiful photos.

In that 14 hours spent on the water I was able to Tweet live from the river. The thanks for that goes to Sony Xperia Go that survived the challenge to be immersed in the water for so much time without any protection. That really is a true smartphone was water adventurers.

A short video clip will be made out of all the nice footage the guys of Bright Visuals.

Until then, seize the day!

The day has come

Finally all the starts, planets and the moon are aligned in the right direction, and also the horoscope prediction is in my favor. That means I can finally start the hydrospeed descend I’ve had in mind since late spring.
Jokes aside, yes, the day has come. Tomorrow morning I will start the river board descend of the beautiful Soča river in the Slovenian Alps. A little bit more then 120km, for which I hope it won’t take me longer then 48h. I won’t sleep during this time and I expect it to be physically and mentally much more challenging then the row across the Atlantic. If not of other reason, because the “way out” will always be just a few meters away. I will have the possibility to quite at any moment and that’s not necessarily a good thing.

I’m excited and nervous at the same time, but also happy that it’s finally here.

Gregor Zadravec, a very good kayaker and photographer will be my shore support, driving along the river and be my babysitter for two days, and Bright Visuals guys will be filming the descend. On the dangerous section of the river (where many souls are resting in peace), I will have support also on the water. Andraž Krpič – Muki, my first kayaking teacher, will help me hold the line between the dangerous siphons.

Hopefully I will be able to Tweet during the descend. I have a new waterproof mobile phone – Sony Xperia Go, which is perfect for such an adventure.

Can’t wait to start!

Soča Hydrospeed Descend

Shortly after I came home from rowing across the Atlantic everything set itself back to the way it was two years ago. I had a long-shot plan and slowly begun to work on it, but I lacked something more on the short notice. Perhaps something thrilling and out of my comfort zone.

Soča river – scouting for photogenic locations

My next challenge will take place on a beautiful river Soča. It really is one of the most picturesque rivers I’ve ever seen and I’m sure that I enjoy every kilometre of her.

Together with Luka and Matej from Bright Visuals we spent the entire Saturday scouting interesting and photogenic places along the river. We started and the very source and followed her to the Adriatic sea (by car, of course). The guys will make a 2-3 min video of the descend and from what we’ve seen, it will be a very interesting one! Pushing my limits

My oldest memories are the one of sea. I’ve always lived near the big blue and I am still fascinated by it’s beauty. The sea is the first and last thing that I see when I open or close the windows of my room.

All my adventures, Dalmatia, the island of Zakynthos, South Korea, the Atlantic ocean, all this were expeditions that had something in common – Read the rest »
